FAREWELL SOCIAL

A meeting of the Returned Soldiers’ Social Club of Manaia was he'd on Monday to farewell Mr and Mrs Howell, who are leaving the district to take up their abode in New Plymouth. A token of the appreciation of the excellent work done by Mr Howell to keep the goodfellowship of the local organisation was presented by the president, who, in the course of his remarks, gave great praise to the local club for the manner in which it worked to. keep the returned soldiers in touch with one another. In forming the local club, llVIr Howell had been one of the prime movers, and with the loss of him and two others during the pa”st 12 months, the club was getting smaller, and it was time others came to support it. In concluding the president expressed the regret of the club in losing Mr Howell, and on their behalf wished him every success in his new sphere. The secretary was then called on to present to Mr Howell on behalf of Mrs Howell, a gift in appreciation of her ■services in connection with our annual mill. The secretary expressed on behalf of the club its great appreciation of the help of the ladies. He said that Mrs Howell had been a conscientious and hlird worker. Members regretted her departure, but wished her every happiness in her new home. ANZAC D4Y. Subsequently Anzac Pay arrangements were thpn discussed, and it was decided to write to the band and all local bodies inviting their co-operation. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

A meeting of the above chamber was held on Monday night. Mr A. G. jßennett presided, and there were present Messrs Allien, Armitage, J. Jeromson, H. Christie, C. Hunger, A. Franklin, E. Long, C. Jeromson (secretary). Apologies lor absence were received from Messrs J. A. G. .Cosgrove, J. Nairn, J. J. Meldon, S. Greaves and S. Blair.

Messrs Christie, Gamlin and Allen were unanimously elected members of the chamber.

Mr Long proposed, and Mr Armitage seconded, that the chamber affiliate with the Associated Chambers of Commerce.—. This was carried.

The public are to be invited to attend the lecture to be given by Mr T. C. List. There is to be a grand Easter social and dance to be held in the Manaia Town Hall in aid of the town candidate on Easter Monday, April 13. There will be a good floor, orchestral imusic and supper. A large attendance is assured.
