At the inquest on the body of Hazei Etcsid, tne victim of the Kia Ora tragedy, the coroner returned the foliowTng verdict: “The deceased, Elsie Haze,: Hoad, died at her motiier’s resi tlence on ripri.: «j. Death was due to snook caused by injuries to the brain and siaiil. hastened by a bullet wound in the left side of the thorax. Hie injuries to the brain and skull were inflicted bv Keginald Hoad with a tomahawk.” . At the conclusion of the inquest, Regina d Hoad was charged with the murder o) his daughter. The prisoner had been seated in the prisoner’s dock during the hearing of tne evidence at the inquest, and appeared to display no interest in the proceedings. Witnesses were sworn and corroborated the evidence given at the inquest. In answer to a question by _the Bench, asking whether lie had anything to say, the accused said he could not realise what had happened. He had a poor recollection of what had happened for the three days preceding the tragedy. The Magistrate: “I do not wish to stop you from saying anything more, but do' you wish to say anything further?” Accused: “No.” The accused was then committed to take his trial at the next sitting of the Supreme- Court, to be Timaru "on May 6. He was removed from the prisoner’s dock in an apparently half-dazed condition.
