KAPONGA JERSEY CLUB.

FIELD DAY AND DEMONSTRATION

There was a very good attendance of members of the Kaponga Jersey Cattle Club and others interested in the breed yesterday to witness the demonstration given by Mr H. E. B. liaison, and ms judging in the various classes of cattle. Mr Watson is official demonstrator to the Ne,v Zealand de.se. o.eeders’ Association. Air Watson was briefly welcomed by Air 1). At a. one, president of the club, who expressed the pleasure of members and farmers generally, at seeing M i Watson ante more in Kaponga. Various classes oi cattle were then .edged bv Air Watson, and in each.ease a vote was taken from the spectators, in most cases, it must ,be added, the judgment of the majority agreed with '.hat of the judge. Air Watson stiessed the value of the .o.uig members giving their opinion, for judges in the future would be required. Malone’s entry 2 and'3. !n nis remarks regarding the placed animals Mr Watson said the champion Mi- Malone’s, wifi* a. very nice specimen ol the breed, well developed .il round and showing penty of stam.na. It was altogether a typical Jersey ndl. Of the second, he said it was a .■mil dairy , sire, had good length of oody and width of rib. The third animal was not so regular in outline as the winners, but he was also a nice beast-. 'Lhe three entries in the .eighteen months class, lie said, were a nice 'yen lot, and all showed good Jersey characteristics. There -were a nice lot of yearlings shown, and the winners looked, likely

to develop into good animals, lhe first was generally better in outline than the others., and had a beautiful spring oi rib. The second was inclined to go down behind the shoulder and was not so’ good all through. Ine female classes were generally very good, and in tlie younger classes there was a large field and strong competition. The matuie cows were,-in i tne judge’s opinion, a very nice even iot, and lie was very pleased with them. The winner had a fine head, and was good bemnd, and h«d great depth through from the front. She had the best udder also. Tlie second, j a younger cow, was inclined to have a sloping rump, but otherwise was quite a good beast. The third did not display so many good points. The yearling heifers were a prumis,ing lot, and all would, in the judge’s opinion, develop into nice animals. A good show was made in the heifer calf class, there being fifteen in the ring. The judge said there were, several different types, and he had some difficulty in selecting the winners. THE PRIZES. There were very good trophies awarded to the winning animals. These included gold medals donated by Dalgety and Co., Lonsdale and Co., Mills Sparrow and Co., Hector Alelow, A. W. Packard, Dodge Bros., and D. P., Malone. COMPLIMENTARY. Before the judge left Mr Alalone thanked him for his good work, and the mariner in which he had endeavoured to foster interest among the young men. A hearty vote -of thanks was carried by acclamation. Air Watson and some of the visitors were entertained at lunch and afteinon tea. , The' Ladies’ Kaponga Croquet Club had a. marquee on the gro ml and supplied refreshments through the day, the funds going to the help of their club. Altogether a very interesting day was spent by all, and it was generally acknowledged that much had been learnt, especially by the younger breeders, which will he of value to them in their farming work.
