STOCK MARKETS
The Farmers’ Co-operative Organisation Society report as under for the week ending April 4: The yardings throughout the week have been very heavy, . most, of our yards being taxed •to their fullest capacity with grown cattle. jPrices have been well maintained, and everywhere clearances have been effected. The entries for sheep have been mostly of fattening ewes and lambs, .for which there has been a good demand. 'There is very little stock offering privately; business has been somewhat restricted. At Uremii, on Monday, we had a good entry of sheep and cattle. Fat tening ewes made 245,, white-faced lambs 20s, fat cows to £5 15s, forward cows £4 10s, heavy boner cows £4 to £4 10s, boners £2 to £2 15s, works bulls £2 to £4, 3-year store bullocks £0 15s. well-bred Shorthorn yearling steers £2 15s 6d. At Kalcaramea, on the same day, we had a small entry which sold at late rates. On Tuesday, at Okaiawa, we had the largest yarding which has come forward for some time. There was a full attendance of exoorters and graziers, and a most satisfactory sale resulted. Fat cows made from £6 to £6 10s. heavy works cows from £5 to £5 10s, i young empty meatay cows to £5 15s, boners £2 to £3 ss, works hulls to £4. two extra choice Jersey weaner heifers £4. heifers in milk to £B, in-calf heifers £4 12s. On Wednesday, at FJtham, a big yarding of c,attic; every pen was full. Competition was keen, and a satisfactory clearance was effected, prices being wed vp to late rate«. Heavy works bulls made £7’ 10s, others £3 to £4, fat cows £6 7s 6cl. empty young cows £4 to £5, light £2 to £2 15s, works cows £3 to £5." On Thursday, at Hawera, we yarded 590 head of cattle and 1000 sheep. The entry of sheep was made up mostly of lambs, for. which there was a good demand. Fat lambs made 37s 6d to 32s 6d. very forward Downs 28s 3d, store white-faced lambs 21s, medium 16s to 1.7 s 6d, Downs to 19s. cullsHo 12s 3d. fattening ewes 22s 3d. Although we had , such a heavy yarding of cattle only a very few prime cows and heifers came forward; in fact, there were, no- heavy prime cattle in the yards. Most of the cows were purchased by the exporters at prices satisfactory to the vendors. Prime cows and heifers made £7 to £B, emntv meatv cows to £5 15s, Villocks to £9 15s. heavy works cows £4 to £O. others £2 to £3 10s, very light canne-s £1 10s. Dairymen were operating for any good, sound young bulls, and this, combined with the cornnet ition of the exporters, resulted in very satisfy"torv prices being obtained for the vendors. "The entry of heifers oii account of Mr G. XV. Gane met with o-ood eonipefition and sold as follows: Six at £B. 10 at £7, 12 at £6. .On account of Douglas Bros.; Eight at £5 17s 6d, 11 at £5. six voung in-calf cows °t. £6, cows and heifers, close to profit £5 to £7. There was a slightly better demand for wearers, and a line of heifers exceptionally good coloured and Veil-grown duality sorts fetched £4. This cannot be taken as any indication of the market, as the bidding was confined to two men who just happened to want a truck each. Other sales were £2 10s to £2. Shorthorns and Holsteins f’Os to 255. The entry of pigs was good, but prices showed a decline on late "sites. Pedigree four-month Berkshire hoars made 2fgn« to Hgns, stores 30s, weaners 8s to ]ss. At Waverley, on Friday, every cattle pen was filled. There was a verv large attendance of hovers, the attraction no doubt- being the dispersal of Mr Fredk. Wilson’s Shorthorns. These cattle were fullv to expectations, and sold under keen competition. The principal line of cows and calves' went to Mr G. V. Pearce. “Castle HilL” at £lO Is. Miss Watt secured tbe 2 and 3-yea l ' in-calf | ho-'fers at- £7 l A s, and the 18-month j heifers fell'to the hid of Mr Roht. | Bremer at £4 10s. These are good cattle, and should he a good investment for the purchasers. The balance of the yarding met with good competition, and practically the whole entry changed. hands n+ pricen satisfactory to the vendors. The principal sales were: Empty! voung rows" and heifers £5 to £5 10s, | fat bullocks £lO to £l] 7s, fat, p.b. I heifers £8 2s fid empty 2 and 3-year j heifers £4 to £4 10s heavy works cows j £3 10s to £4 10s, others £2 to £2 10s, 18-month empty Shorthorn and Here- 1 ford heifers £-3 6s, 24-vear steers £5 6s to £4 14s. 18-morith _ steers £3. emntv 18-month dairy heifers (brindle colours) £3, springing heifers (close up) £4 10s. ' We also conducted our Waverley horse fair, and our Hawera sale was concluded on Saturday. So far as this has gone at. the time of writing the demand is very good-
