Until a permanent appointment is made, Mr W. F. Jurvie, late of Hawera, will fill the position of postmaster at Palmerston North, vice Mr 11. Martin, who has retired on superannuation.

The retirement on superannuation is announced of Mr C. Zachariah, District Public Trustee at Wellington, after the compietion of 38 years in the public service. Mr Zachariah was at one time stationed at Hawera. Mr. Claude Mills, solicitor, of Blenheim, and Mr. T. F. Bull, town, clerk, Blenheim, are spending the day in Hawera. and leave by car for Wellington to-morrow morning. tJ The council of the Hawera Chamber of Commerce last night decided to write to Mrs Massey expressing their regret at the illness of the Prime Minister, and also wishing him a speedy recovery. i ‘

i The Rev. and Mrs. Kelly, who re- ! cently arrived from the Old Country, have taken, up their dutiesat St. Stephen’s Church, Waverlev. Miss Mary M. Hickey, M.A. (Sister M. St. Domitille) of the Mission Convent, Christchurch, attained the distinction of having conferred upon her the degreei of Doctor of Literature (Litt.D.j, the first woman in New Zealand and one of the few, if any, in Australia to attain that honour (says a Christchurch paper). Sister Domitille, who is the (laughter ol Mr and the late Mrs J. C Hickey, of Opunake, gained Ker B.A. degree some years ago at the Canterbury College, and the following year gained her B.A. degree with first-class honours in history. In May she leaves for London and the Continent to pursue her studies. Dr. J. McGhie, whose health has not been satisfactory for some months pa»t, has been advised to take a long vacation, and has in consequence decided tc visit America, where it is his intention to spend six months visiting hospitals in tI.S.A. and Canada. Dr. McGhie leaves Hawera on Tuseday next for Auckland, whence he sails by the Niagara on the following Tuesday. During the absence of Dr. McGhie his locum tenons will be Dr. Stokes, resident medical officer of the Hawera public hospital.

Last evening at the Church of Christ, Ha went, a very enjoyable tune was spent by members and friends who gathered to bid farewell to Mrs. F. \v. Greenwood, who is shortly leaving ioi Auckland. The chair was taken bv Mr. McKain, while Miss E. spindle presided at the organ. Ihe prograimiK took the form of a social, no games being indulged in on account of the absence of children. The following contributed to a most acceptable programme: Misses Spurdle, Westerly, Mills and New, Mesdames McKain and Dryoon, Messrs. Jones, Greenwood and Reid. At the close the chairman, in presenting to Mrs. Greenwood a beautiful leather handbag, expressed the good wishes of, all present and wished the guest health and happiness in her new associations. Mrs. Reid, president of the W.C.T.U., and Mrs. Goring, of (he Baptist Church, also spoke. Mrs. Greemvodd suitably replied. After a dainty supper had ibeen served by the ladies, the , social dispersed with the singing of “God be with you” and the benediction.
