FIRE BOARD
The quarterly meeting of the Fire Board was held in the Council Chambers yesterday afternoon. Those present were Messrs. E. H. Thomas (chairman), T. King, T. C Stanners, F. Honan, M. AY. Allom, S. O. Jones and the secretary, Mr. M. Waters. Leave of absence was .granted Mr 1. J. IJridger.
The Town Clerk wrote advising that the matter of providing some system of preventing leaves from' gathering at the water intake had not yet been decided upon by the Borough Council, also that the matter oi re-arranging the chairs in the Town hall„ The installation of a light in the lire escape landing and the erection of a" door from the picture operator’s box was receiving attention. !he superintendent (My. H. A. Xuttall) reported as follows : —I beg to re-port--that the" brigade has had three calls during the quarter—Box Co.. Wilson and Canham’s hide store and an old shed at the rear of Ale. 11. H. ALar. chant’s auction mart. AH tiie fires were discovered in good time and very little damage was done, 'the origa-tie turned out promptly and in full force and soon had the ftres under control. The brigade has been kept up to full strength, and have been attending meetings and practices and have been showing interest in the work. AVe he.a our local competitions during the quarter, nearly every man competing, sonic good times were registered, ad being very much improved on previous competitions. Owing to my Brigade hoiu.ng the T.U.F.B. biannual demonstration in Eltham early next year,, 1 am practising competition events on practice night * instead of the usual we. practices. We are hoping to be in the prize list at the demonstration. l'lie water pressure for this quarter has been the same, as usual, standing at 5-51 bs. at noon and,7slbs at 10 p.m., except on two occasions in February when the pressure was down to 201b5., owing to the grating being blocked at the intake. I hope sometning wijl be done in this matter before the. winter sets in, otherwise there will be tar too much water in the river to do anything. I. understand ./that /the council have this matter in hand and trust’ that by the end of next quarter, 1 wn. be able to report that the trouble at the intake lias been remedied. indicators.—Nothing further has been done as regards indicators in the main streets. I would suggest tnat tin. galvanised pipe be set into the kerbing, dtt high and painted white, /jn lieu \n concreting around plugs oi tar sea.eu streets.-' With spotlight on the motor,, these-could., be discerned more quick in than the concrete, and would be unicx. cheaper.- .. . ' Anct Station. —At present 1 have five men on. the station, and we are Jiiuy equipped, . everything being in goot, order. AVe have had some trouble witu the ringing apparatus on the bell. After the second trial, I discovered ito trouble ‘ and the bell is now working satisfactorily. A powerful <?ieetric light has been fitted in the front of tinstation and is a great improvement on the old lighting system and greatly ap preeiated by ihe members of. the brigade. At our last meeting Alr ; Goldsmith, the Power Board’s wiring superintendent, ' gave some useful information on the dangers of electrical cm rent, which the members much appreciated; To keep in touch *wi.h .Mr. Goldsmith, 1 have arranged to have his name added to the telephone list s<he can be* present at all fire s in cast the current should be cut oil'. ■ In- conclusion I would be pleased il the board would keep in mind the felcphofie to be installed at the deputy superintendent’s resideuce.
