MINERS TRAPPED
IN FLOODED PIT. ( RESCUERS WITHDRAWN. ! LITTLE HOPE OF SAVING THEM. SY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION-COPYRIGHT. LONDON, March 30. A large number of miners were trapped in the Montague pit at Scotsvvood, near Newcastle, owing to the inflow of water, due to holing through. Nearly 300 men were below at the time, but all but 39 escaped. A rescue party, which descended to erect a canvas door for the purpose of diverting the foul air, was compelled to retire. The entombed men were seen to be clutching a projecting ridge near the roof. Little hope is entertained for nine, but there is a possibility'that the remainder, who are in a > sheltered place, may be saved. The rescuers at the Montague mine were withdrawn, at midnight. The opinion is expressed. that only a miracle can save the entombed men. The volume of water is stated to be increasing rapidly m parts of the pit. Anxious thousands are keeping vigil at the pit mouth in the hope that Hie rescue efforts will be resumed.
