THE LILYDALE TRAGEDY.

As the res-ult of an inquest on Bent, who was’ found shot at Lily-dale, Vernon was committed lor trial- on. acharge of wilful murder. [A youths named- Bent was found dead on- the road at- Lilydale-. ■ A bill let, wound was in/his- forehead. Howard Vernon was arrested in connection with the tragedy. The police gave evidence that a t the. time of his arrest Vernon made a, .statement. Itwas to the effect chat Bent had been keeping company, with bis (Vernon’s) sister-in-law. He had -seen them in eircnnxsta-upes which, lie considered improper, and had warned Bent-. On the night of the tragedy he followed' them, a loaded rifle. He saw them raider circumstances which he -considered nob right, and fired at “Bent with, the .intention, of frightening him, but the bullet entered his head. Accused arid his sister-in-law attended to the wound, and lie went to find a- doctor. Nearing the- doctor’s house' lie became frightened and went home, leaving Pent lving where he was 'subsequently 'found. 1
