DOUGLAS MAWSON WOMEN,
STORY’ OF CAPTURE
BELIEVED TO BE A MY’TH,
BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT (Received March 28, 9.45 a.m.) MELBOURNE, March 28. , A missionary located on Crocodile ; Island, Northern Territory, reported to the Acting-Administrator that extensive enquiries from natives in the Caledon Bay district, regarding the story of white women alleged to be held captive, had proved fruitless. This is regarded in the Home Territory Department as practically conclusive evidence that the story of the Douglas Mawson survivors being seized by natives is a myth. [For several months now rumours .have been current in Australia to the effect that two women, survivors of the wreck of the steamer Douglas Mawson, which has now been missing for several years, were captives in the hands of natives in the Northern Territory. One story had it that they had been married to blaclcfellows. An expedition sent by the Governmentp roved abortive, while extensive enquiries were made by Government officials and those having an influence with the natives, but resulted in contradictory statements being obtained, and no definite knowledge has been obtained that could solve the mystery.]
