BROMINE FROM THE SEA.
AN AMERICAN EXPERIMENT BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT NEW YORK, March 26. The steamer Ethyl, chartered by the American Chemical Society, sails on April lo on a voyage to extract bromine from the sea in order to relieve the shortage. If the expedition is successful, it may result in a fleet of vessels being equipped as chemical laboratories to roam the seas. [Bromine is one of the elements which is, at ordinary temperatures, a deep reddish brown caustic liquid of a very disagreeable odour, and emits a brownish vapour. It occurs in nature only in combinations, being found in minute quantities in sea-water, in many saline springs, in salt deposits, and also in mineral bromyrite. Free bromine is commonly prepared by the action of chlorine and bromides. Bromine is used in the manufacture of dyes, in medicine, in chemical operations, and as a disinfectant.]
