A WOLF SPIDER.

All round tlie pond and on the garden beds the wolf spiders were busy. They are called wolf spiders because they hunt for their food just like real wolves; they do not sit at home and spin webs like the other spiders (writes M. H. Crawford in an English magazine). These wolf spiders always carry their eggs about with them. You would have thought it would have been much safer to leave them at home. But wolf spiders do not think so. They fasten the eggs up in a little silken bag and take them about when they go to look for their food. Sometimes theee bags are as big as the spider’s body, hut they are very light, though there are often as many as a hundred eggs inside.

One day I saw a wolf spider drop her egg-bag, and at once, with a blade ofgrass, I pushed the egg-bag away from the spider. The spider was in great trouble. She looked everywhere for the bag, but she could not find it. After a time I gave it back f .to her. She caught it up with two of her long, strong legs, and ran away with it.
