Grandeur marked the opening of Parliament by King Fuad, who was loyally greeted by crowds en route. FieldMarshal Allenby was an imposing figure in his fiield-mnrshal’s uniform. Zaghloul Pasha took a seat in the Chamber amid profound silence. The Prime Minister, Ziwar Pasha, read the Speech from the Throne. It reiterated the deepest regret at the murder of the Sirdar, and expressed the hope that the perpetrators of the crime would soon, receive merited punishment. Anglo-Egvptian relations had again become habitually friendly a nd trusted, thanks, to the good understanding between Parliament and Ministry. The latter would succeed in removing the charges and restrictions arising out of the British ultimatum, so when its task was accomplished it would seize a more favourable opportunity to resume negotiations in the effort to secure the complete independence of Egypt and the Sudan in a manner conforming to the evidence of Egypt’s right and the justice of their cause. The Government would seek the admission of Egypt to the League of Nations.
Following the opening of Parliament. Zaghoul Pasha was elected President of tlie Chamber bv 125 votes to 35.- -A.N.Z.C.A.
