RUGBY REFEREES.
SOUTH TAR AN Alyl ASSOCIATION. ANNUAL MEETING. The piesidenit (Mr. A. F. Neil,son.) waisi dii the. chair at the annual meeting of the Referees’ Association liast night. There was only - a moderate attendance. . The chairmail reported on the work of the year, and said that much, good work had been done. He said that the association had a difficult task to fulfil .in keeping up with the ever increasing number of the lower grade matches, a.nidi the committee were often hard put to find men:. Therefore they would always welcome now members: He paid a tribute to the good work of the secretary, Mr. J. J. Goodwin, to whom they owed a great deal for his consistent attention to the activities of the association. .He made reference to the All Blacks’ great record, and said he hoped they would jbe able to give the referees in the Dominion some suggestions of interest and value.
The election, of officers resulted as follows: —-President, Mr. A. F. Neilson; vice-presidents, Messrs. A. H. Guy, J. F. Kiley, H. G. Whittington.; committee, Messrs. H. G. Whittington (Hawera), A. ,Lees (Okaiawa), A. H. Christie (Waimate), B. Fearon (Kaponga), W. Broughton, iPat'ea); executive, Messrs. J. J. Goodwin, A. H. Guy, and W. Grant; examining committee, Messrs. A. E. Neilson, A. H. Guy and H. G. Whittington ; delegate to appointments board, Mr. F. W. Mason; delegates to central executive, Messrs. H. G. Wluttington and J. F. .Kiiley;, secretary, Mr. J. J. Goodwin.
New members elected: Mr. A. R. MoNae; memlber transferred, Mr. L. H. Clapham (from, Manawatu). For the position of" representative for Taranaki on the Rugby Union, it was decided to support the nomination of Mr. R. ,R. Fyrer (Stratford). An honorarium of £3 3s was granted to the secretary (Mr. J. J. Goodwin) in recognition of his good and capable work for the association,. The promotion of junior referees of last year was considered, and the examining committee were asked to report on the matter with a view to .submitting names of those qualified for promotion. The idea of the scheme is, as in previous years, to encourage juniors who show promise. Hearty votes of thanks were passed to the president and the various officers, and to the newspapers, for saving the game and the affairs of the association, such, wide publicity. A, vote of thanks to the chair concluded a useful meeting. >’ ,
