SINGAPORE BASE.

AGAINST SINGAPORE.

JAPANESE PRESS ACTIVE

MISUNDERSTANDING FEARED

LONDON, March 7

Alarmist statements regarding Singapore are again appearing in the Japanese Press.

The Tokyo correspondent of the 'J'imes says that it is admitted that cannot object to Britain’s strategic operations in any part of the world, but as*Japan is the only Oriental naval Power the Singapore scheme cannot be aimed at any other. It is contended that constant references in Australia and New Zealand to Japan’s aggressive designs lend colour to Japan’s suspicions that the Singapore move is against Japan. Misunderstanding is feared, and Britain is being urged to reconsider her proposed action.
