PALMERSTON N., Alarch 18The Australian athletes competed at the Linton Amateur Athletic Club’s annual sports to-day, and a record crowd watched local competitors try their pace against the best of Australia. The visitors ran in a lucky sporting spirit.- hut were handicapped out of the winning positions. However, they gained second in four events and third in two out of eight starts. If the clocks are to he believed; N. CJrehan (Brisbane) performed a great feat by running 220 yards in 22sec., or I 1-ssec. off the time 'in which the championship was won at Wanganui. Gredin started three times, including a beat, but on each occasion was beaten by J. McDonald. C. Burness (Sydney), the cyclist, addl'd another spill to the chapter of accilents he was met with. At the finish >f the mile he was forced hv a skidding cyclist to run into another competitor. He appeared later in the two and five miles, showing something of his true "orm in the latter.
Hyde, the crack Victorian miler, started twice, in the 880 yards and the mile, securing, a place each time. White was second in the 440 yards.
