OPUNAKE LINE.
FIRST PASSENGER. TRAIN. SERVICE PROBABLE IN FEW WEEKS. With no unnecessary fuss, and without ceermony the first train on a lino that will soon be brought into regular service, the long-promised and muchdelayed line to Opunnke, was sent away front Hawera this morning. At 7.45 a.m.’ it left en route to Patifci >ad, the nearest point to Pihama, where the Opunake races are being held to-day. On board were about sixty passengers, forty-four racehorses, their jockeys and attendants. Driver Coomher was in charge of the engine, and guard Daniel Myers of the train. .Mr. J. Cahill was in charge as transport officer, and Mr. Cummane went to take command of the arrangements at Patiki. Road. , At Te Roti the carriages and horse boxes were shunted on to the new line, and two small Public Works engines took them in tow, manned by a Public Works crew and guard. And so the new service was ushered into being, and it is expected that it will be opened regularly in a few weeks' time, and will, it. is hoped, be of great benefit to. the country along the route to Opunake.
