OLD WELLINGTON.
Recently a Wellington paper gave a very interesting story concerning the purchase of an old site- in Wellington for the proprietors of tlie Dominion. A ; description " was given of some of the old premises, adjacent. Concerning one of these the writer said: There, too, existed in the late ’so’s the first iron foundry of any consequence, a-iid later still the first tinworks (established by J. and H. Barber for their meat canning business). It is related that when tlie men were digging for the solid in order to lay a fir in foundation foil ‘Chore's Building,’ on the corner of Mercer and Wakefield Streets, they struck a. layer of tin tailings which could not be penetrated, and to this, day the foundation of that back wall rests on: a totara plank, which in turn rests on a ‘vein’ of. tinned sheet iron scraps.”
