KAWERA COUNCIL MEETS. PAST MONTH’S BUSINESS. Tli© monthly meeting; of the Hawera Borough Council was held last night, when there were present the Mayor (Mr. L. A. Bone), Crs,. Morrissey, Osborne, Champion, Townsend, Burdekin, Brunette, Surrey and Reid. CORRESPONDENCE. Explanations with regard to wandering stock were received irom Messrs. Fair© aricl Piper, and after consideration were accepted. The Minister ,ol Public Works forwarded a circular letter warning the council to take care in the erection of scaffolding near electric wire transmission lines. —The matter .vas referred to the building inspector. Mr. A. Gray wrote stating that ,lie was instructed to. inform. I lie co uncil that the Technical High School Board were willing to pay half the cpsit of the upkeep of boundary plantation-between the school grounds and the park. The letter stated that there seemed to bo an ideai that the school undertook to look after the trees, but to he best of the writer’s knowledge no such promise had ever been, made.

Cr. Osborne: “I think they did! I remember it was mentioned at the time that with, a number of fine lusty boys the young trees could easily be kept free from weeds.” The council decided to, accept the offer, the council to do the work and the school hoard to pay half the cost.

The Hawera croquet tournament committee wrote thanking the council for allowing them the use of the park Lawns during the recent tournament. They also wished to thank the workmen for keeping the lawns in £uc.h good order.—Hie letter was received. NEW SANITARY , REGULATIONS.

New sanitary regulations making the old sanitary by-laws void were adopted by the council. Or. Reid said that in the past each sanitary inspector had some alteration or addition to make to the by-laws, and the council being laymen ini the matter did not know what was right or wrong. The new regulations were prepared by experts for the Health Department and were hound to he satisfactory. WA.THI BEACH RESERVE. Damage being done to the track leading dowi) to the Wai.hi beach was reported by Cr. Townsend. It was left with the reserves committee to report on the matter to a special meeting of the, council. NEW MOTOR REGULATIONS. The Mayor reported that the special committee, set up by the council to,go into the* matter of objections to the new regulations under the Motor Vehicles’ Ait, had not yet completed their report, and, the committee would therefore like an extension, of time until Tuesday.—The extension was granted.. ' COMMITTEE REPORTS. The following committee reports were adopted: By-iaws.—lt has been decided that the matter of by-laws re offensive trades, and cattle sale yards he referred to the. Borough Solicitor, Town Clerk and Sanitary Inspectoc to go into apd.

AVorks. —It is recommended : (1) That Hospital Board’s application for permission to connect new premises to borough sewer be granted, subject to payment of £8 per annum, estimated .cost of extra current at Grant street pump, also as to conditions set out in Borough Engineer’s letter of February 29. (2) That old building on borough reserve in Albion street, next to Rost Office land, he demolished, and any suitable timber and iron to be stored for use re buildings or shelter sheds at Waihi beach reserve. General.—Air H. M. Lee waited on the committee regarding a letter received by him from the Town Clerk with regard to the taking of sand from the cliffs at the AVaihi beach reserve. Mr Lee stated that material was now being taken 12 yards beyond the reserve, and he was working away from it; also that no considerable quantity was being taken from one place, conse- ; quently the stability of the cliffs would not be affected. Mr Lee agreed to write the council undertaking to metal the track and keep in order, so that it would not he damaged by the passage of horses used by him on the beach. It is recommended: That Mr T. Ash’s offer to graze paddock at Turuturu-Mokai Reserve on same terms as last year he accepted; that letters re damage to streets by cartage of building materials for new hospital be sent as suggested by Borough Solicitor’s letter ; that a sub-committee consisting of the Mayor, Crs Osborne, Burdekin, and Townsend consider new draft regulations re motor lorries and report to council on Monday next; that application by Hawera Association Football Club for use of ground at Park be granted, and that club he thanked ;for contribution; that engineer’s suggestion to -connect Old Me it’s Home with main to new hospital, thus doing away with small -pine, he adopted; that- balance of subsidy (£100) be paid to band; that Borough Solicitor’s letter re Stancombe and lease of part sub. 37 he referred to incoming council : that an asphalt track three feet in width be laid on western side of Gladstone street gully nearest South road; that engineer he authorised to build up footpath to level of grass by memorial arch ; that horse tie purchased at £25 for King Edward Park. OFFICERS’ REPORTS. The engineer’s progress 7-eport was as follows: Broken weather has retarded progress on the work of metalling and tarring flanks of Nelson, street and Regent street. The following footpaths have been coated with bitumen this season: Vogel street, Disraeli street, Morrissey street, Collins street, George street, Grey street, Erin street, Cameron street, Albion street, Gladstone street, Wilson street. Dixon Avenue has been coated with bitumen. Flanks of Princes street have been washed preparatory to bitumen. High street had had sijme of the humps cut out, and will be coated with bitumen shortly. The turning place at cemetery gate has been formed in metal and bitumen. Cost £3B; amount in annual estimate £SO. The very heavy traffic to the new hospital, is damaging Camberwell road and part of High street. I think regulations should be made. The usual maintenance work has been attended to. —Adopted.

The Sanitary Inspector’s report stated: During the month one plumbing and one drainage permit were* issued ; 12 premises were inspected, also two drains of a total length of 90 feet were inspected and tested. One plumbing job was inspected.—Adopted. The librarian’s report was as follows: I beg to report that 11 new members joined during the month, six or, seven leaving, so the present number on books is about 460. New books to the number of 72 were bought, including 13 of good general literature. This number is bigger than usual, but fewer can be ordered this month if necessary. About 100 old novels have been cleared out lately, and so it is good to.have plenty of new ones. The- .January number of “Chums” lias been stolen from the library table.—Adopted.
