—♦ JUBILEE OF PARISH AND SCHOOL. The Pi glut Reverend Monsignor Power announced to hi si people yesterday that steps were now being taken to celebrate' the jubilee of the parish and of the first school in. Hawera. This celebration should have taken place towards) the end of January last, but was postponed for wise reasons. Father Pertuis, the first priest, arrived in January, 1875, and opened a schooj in the block,house m February of that year with. Mists Ellen Cookley as first teacher. She. was succeeded bv Mrs. Austin, Whittaker, and she by Mrs. Kirk, who continued the good work until the arrival of the Sisters of Saint Joseph on February 17. 1885. The celebrations will begin on a day, probably in. June, to. suit the convenience of the Archbishops and other dignitaries - who have promised to attend.
