IN THE AIR

EMPIRE’S DEFENCES. LONG FLIGHTS PROPOSED. SINGAPORE BASE. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. (Received March 14, 9.5 a.m.) LONDON, March 13. Tn the House of Commons, the coordination of the Empire’s defences bulked large when the debate on the air force estimates was resumed. At. its conclusion, Sir Samuel Hoare, Air Minister, said that he hoped, during the present year, to organise longdistance flights within the Empire, firstly from Cairo to Capetown, and seeondlv from Cairo to Lake Chad, which he hoped would be forerunners of many others which would show the flag in the air over a great part of the Empire. Commander Kenwortliy drew attention to the absence of any provision for air defences at Singapore.. Sir Samuel Hoare replied that such an expenditure was at present unnecessary, but the item would appear on the Air Estimates in due course, as the Singapore programme developed. Reuter.
