WAIMATE WEST COUNTY COUNCIL.

WORK OF THE MONTH. The Waimate West County Council met at Manaia on Thursday. There .were present: Crs: E. Long (chairman), J. F. Stevensoig J. S. McKay, F. Leslie, W. 11. Ib Fleming, F. Mourie, A. Gamlin and Mr V: H. Holiday (clerk). ENGINEER’S REPORT. The engineer (Mr J. A. Hansen) reported that since the last meeting the whole of the Normanby Road between the Manaia and InaJha Roads had been retarred, and the gang' was now" retarring the top end of the Lower’ Auroa Road. About eight day*’ work had been done on the filling over the Waikoufa stream on the Normanby Road. The Kaupokonui bridge on the Skeet Road wa’s finished, and part of the Slant had. been moved down to the iapuni bridge on the- Main South Road. The old ironbark rails in the Otakehoi bridge on the Skeet Road had been replaced with concrete, and the bridge had been painted. The bridge foreman (Mr. Maddock) was away for a week, and other work had been found to keep the bridge hands going during his absence. Mr. ■ Boyce had made a start delivering the crushed metal on the Oeo Road and had delivered about 250 yards.

The report was adopted. RjATES. Jii explanation of his remarks at the previous meeting when the question of overdue rates had been under discussion, Qr. Stevenson said he had meant to imply that up to the present the council had acted in the best interests of ratepayers in refraining as long as possible from adding the 10 per cent, penalty to overdue rates, and it would probably pay the ratepayers’ to allow the. council to pay the bank rate of interest rather, than impose he 10 per cent, penalty at an earlier date. EGMONT PARK BOARD. The clerk reported that at a special meeting held since previous meeting, the chairman and Cr. Gamlin had been, appointed to the south committee from which, together with the other committee, the Egmont National Park Board is to be-elected. GENERAL.
