ATHLETICS
NOTES BY “SPIKE.’
There are two more evening meet- , ings to be held, and the West Coast J championships at Rawera on Easter Saturday. Championship events do not count towards the points prize compe- j tit-ions. . . ,j Carroll, Hunt unci Griffin still I£ft cl j in fciie respective divisions, but none of | them are certainties yet. S. Lay is [ only 1A points behind Hunt. • j Th e evening meeting on Wednesday j last was a success, the fields being j good, except in the cycling^event. I Weir ran well to win the Vo yards, and it is hoped that he will improve even more for the West Coast championships. I rather think McGregor would have been a hard proposition in the <5 had he not fallen in his heat. Mac wants a change of luck. . j Thomas and Gray, who won their i heats, were impatient on the mark ior j the final, and made a bad break,.'-which put them back half a yard each. The “colts” team, wliich is back •an scratch, has now had three w|hs this season, the Banks one, and Excelsior next time. 1 have not noticed where any club in New Zealand can put out such a , good field of javelin throwers as we j nave in Ha-wera. 1 am satisfied that we could pick four men to defeat lour men from any other club. S-. Lay, oif scratch in the javelin event, got in a beautiful throw on Wednesday night, and just managed to beat his brother Tom by ,3 inches. Griffin is still riding very consistently, and should be the man to keep the Wanganui riders interested in the West Coast championships. The quarter on Wednesday night was a fast race, but the limit men were on 880 yards marks. Thomas, on virtual scratch, attempted the impossible. ' Bailey’s 880 yards, off 55, m 2nnn. 4secs. was a good, run, and I pick him j to* stand a chance in .the SBO West | Coast championships. , i Bert Burgess is now a member oi j the committee, filling a vacancy caused by the non-attendance, at meetings of another member. At the New Zealand championship meeting a new method of judging was used. Instead of the old rule: “You take first, Jim’ll take- second, and I’ll take third,” each judge placed three men, just* as if he were doing the whole job himself. Then the judges compared notes before making the announcement. This plan is to be followed at the West Coast championships also., v.
