SWIMMING.
There has not been much more than usual interest in the local swimming world recently, interest in attendifnee at the Baths' is still maintained, and each holiday sees a large number enjoying the river and slirr. The weather, however, is showing signs of autumn and consequently tire attraction is decreasing. IN AUSTRALIA. CHARLTON IN THE COUNTRY. Andrew Charlton is away on a station for a while, and at last week-end, in company with Dick Eve, the celebrated Manly diver, he motored to Tamworth to give an exhibition at Paradise Weir. Seven thousand spectators are reported to have attended and accorded Charlton and Eve a great welcome. A SENSATIONAL INCIDENT. While competing at Launceston (Tasmania) on Saturday in the 1000 yards breast-stroke championship, Max Reisz, the Hobart swimmer, became suddenly para U sed in the water. He was in 'great danger of drowning when a spectator, named P. Woolley, dived in, fully dressed, swam towards Reisz, and pulled him to a place of safety. THRILLING RESCUES. The surf championship at -Bondi last Sunday were interrupted while competitors rescued persons who could not swim in the surf half so well as they thought they could. Four men were extricated from a misty patch by Tihby Fletcher and others. While the junior alarm reel race was in progress at Nobbys carnival on Saturday, E. W. Young, the local belt man, sank near one of the buoys with cramp. Canning, another competitor, who was iusit behind, dived md brought up Young. Canning was declared the winner.
