Two Maori lads went into a cart sTied at Tangoio to have a smoke, lighting a candle for the purpose, says a Napier message. The candle fell, on to a tin of benzine, and a conflagration resulted, the shed bursting into flames. One lad, Jack Wane, was burnt to death, and the other seriously burnt. The weekly luncheon of the Hawera Rotary Club was held to-day with a 98 per cent attendance of rotarians. In the unavoidable absence of the president, Vice-President Rotarian T. Taylor occupied the chair. A visitor, Rotarian Stan Reid, of Auckland, and Rotarian Dixon each gave interesting particulars of the recent Rotary Conference held in Wellington. The addresses, which supplied matter additional to that published in the Wellington Press, proved most interesting and instructive. The lure of the big romantic world yesterday proved too much for two young Hawera boys; they decided to see life and, in the language of their mates, “cleared out from home.” Eighteen miles from their parents’ care represented a long and arduous journey to the young hopefuls, hut to their surprise they found that the police in the distant town of Stratford knew as much about their movements as they did, and consequently they had to put up with the company of an officer of the law. who returned them to their home to-day. A Sydney message stated that it lias now been disclosed that Oldfield, the Australian wicket-keeper, played through the last test match with two broken ribs. The damage was caused bv a fast one from Gregory in the fourth lest at Melbourne. Oldfield was medically advised not to play, hut he insisted on taking the field.
