FUSION CANDIDATE.
FOR WELLINGTON NORTH. colonel McDonald standing. Colonel T. W. McDonald, who contested a Wellington constituency as an independent candidate at the last election, announces that he is now in a position to state definitely that he will accede to the request to stand for Wellington North. He will stand ‘‘as a supporter of a. fusion of Reform and Liberal forces.” In submitting his reasons, he states that he firmly believes that the present three-party political system renders stable government impossible, that country should be placed before party, that there is very little real difference between the Reform and Liberal parties, and that ‘‘the only effective way to prevent the Labour Party from, either becoming the 'Government of tile country or from holding the balance of power in a triangular Parliament is by the consolidation of the forces opposed to extreme Socialism, by a speedy return to the two-party system.” “A large section of the Press advocates this change,” he proceeds, “and 1 believe that most people who place the interest of the country before that of any party are emphatically of the opinion that the psychological moment for the coup d’etat is at hand. The onus for continuing the division of the antiextreme Socialistic Party, to the detriment of the State, should he placed on, the shoulders of that party which refuses to consolidate, and the maximum support should be given to the party which agrees to consolidate the antiextreme Socialistic forces.”
