DAIRY CONTROL.
OPPOSITION IN DUNEDIN. (BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATIONDUNEDIN, March 8. At a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce the following resolution was •carried : “This council strongly protests at the extreme step contemplated by the Dairy Control Bioard in seeking to assume absolute control of the dairy produce export trade of the Dominion. The council desires to point out that while this chamber has always recognised and approved of the advantages to be gained by collective bargaining in respect to freight, insurance and other charges, and the benefit of complete co-operation in respect to packmg, grading and the proper regulation of shipments, the chamber views with concern the extreme powers in the Ad> relating to the control of dairy produce. When, the Bill was under consideration am. assurance was given that these exceptional powers would only be exercised in cases of great emergency, .such as war or a national financial crisis. The council submits that the action of the board under present conditions! is an unwarrantable interference with the private right of freedom, of contract, that the disturbance of trade and finance in the Dominion will be serioti'S. that the proposed arrangements for marketing and control in London are not such a,s to inspire confidence, and that the right, of the large minority of producers who are unwilling participants in the scheme, has not been sufficiently considered. For these reasons this chamber begs the Prime Minister, the Minister for Agriculture and Cabinet members to- consider carefully whether it is 'advisable, in the best interests of the country, to sanction, absolute control of dairy produce.”
