MARMALADE AND JAMS.
DOAITNION AIANTTFACT.URED,
PRICE STEADILY RISING,
There are some articles manufactured in the Dominion which form useful secondary industries, making use, as they do, of primary produce gioavn here in large quantities and in avhich it would seem that outside competition could be easily beaten. One of these is the making of marmalades and jams and the preserving of fruit. The orchard industry is . one that is carried on successfully in many parts of the Dominion, and much fruit of the best quality is groavn, and should be grown a-erv cheaply provided land is secured at a - reasonable figure. The making of this fruit into jams and marmalade is carried on also in several centres, and the product is of excellent quality, but the price does not compare favourably, with those of English manufacture. Talking to a Star representative, a leading grocer of the district spoke on this subject. He said that sugar is one of the main constituents of jams and marmalade, and, avhereas it has come doavn in price until it is now cheaper, he believes, than in many other countries, the price of those household.commodities supplied by Dominion manufacturers shoavs a steady rise. He says that those of British manufacture’ can be landed in New Zealand cheaper and at least of a quality equal to that of the Dominion , manufacturer, whereas he considers the latter should easily be able to maintain a. margin in price in liis own favour. It was to. be remembered also that the oranges used by Home manttfacturers for marmalade ehme mainly from Jamaica, and have to hear the "freight charge from that “The position seems.’’ he said, to be one inviting competition from the Old Country, and later from Germany in the near future. It looks to be a matter demanding close inquiry, for the industry is one of value to the Dominion.”
