Apparently, however, the authorities had discovered there was no such clause in the Act, and therefore 'an amendment had been passed, passed. As the result of a light amongst sailors on the Trebartha at Wellington on Friday night, three coloured seamen (Dan Roberts, Donald Farr, and Peter Johnson) and two whites (Meredith O’Connor and William Moore) appeared at the court on Saturday. Roberts was sentenced to seven days in gaol, and O’Connor, Farr, and Moore were fined £3 or seven days. The case against Johnson was withdrawn. v Some time ago the Hawera County Council received a schedule dealing with registration of eating houses, and the clerk put it aside, thinking it had no application in the county. However, lie was informed by an inspector that there was one such place to be licensed, a nrivate house.
