A GREAT WIN.
FOR HAWERA FIRE BRIGADE. NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIP. AND POUR SHIELDS. Unique in the history of Hawera is the record made by the local fire brigade’s team, which, at the New Zealand. Fire Brigades’ Demonstration at Christchurch last week, succeeded in winning the New Zealand championship, which carries with it the championship shield, and the high pressure, Merryweather and Simplex shields. it was on Saturday night that, the Mayor, Mr L. A. Bone, who is also a member of the Ilawera Fire Board, received the good news, and naturally it was not long before others in the town knew of the honours which had been won by the Hawera men. To a Star reporter, Mr Bone stated that the Fire Board 'were more than gratified that, through the appointment of Air A. Morrison as superintendent, the brigade, in such a short time, had been brought up to a state of efficiency that had enabled them to beat, in competition brigades from all over the Dominion. He siiidi that the performance put up also reflected the greatest credit upon the whole team, who had worked and trained for the jiast five months. "The Fire Board, the Borough Council, and the ratepayers appreciate the good work done and the sacrifices made in training, and it rests with the people themselves to see that no obstacles are-placed'in the brigade’s way that will hamper them in the case of their having to fight any big fire." In conclusion, Air Bone said it was intended that the. team be given a public reception ’ on their return to Hnwera to-morrow evening. The band would be out.and would accompany the men back to the fire station. PAST PERFORMANCES. Each year Hawera has sent a team to the demonstrations, but never have they secured, the honours that have this year come their way. The lasttime Hawera won a shield was at Dunedin in lflOfi, when, under Captain <T. E. Wilson, the local men annexed the manual shield. The only other time that Hawera met with' 'such a success was at Napier in 1003, when, under Captain Wilson, they won Die handsome high pressure shield. Superintendent Morrison has now captained the New Zealand champion team for three successive demonstrations. In 1921, at Napier, he led the Hillside (Dunedin) brigade to victory, and in 1023 lie repeated the success with the same brigade’s teiun at Dunedin, and in 1925 lie has won the honour with ta team from the newly reconstructed Hawera brigade. SUCCESSFUL TEAAL The successful Hawera team is as follows: Superintendent A. Aloiwison, Foreman 11. Hurley, and Firemen P. Grace, J. Ziusli and E. A. Hart/ The men have won distinction amongst 08 competing teams, and their performance is worthy of the highest praise.
