PATEA.
(from Our Own Correspondent.) VALEDICTORY. On Wednesday evening last the members of the Patea Athletic Association met at- the Egmont Tea Rooms to hid farewell to Mr. M. Taylor, a popular member of the association, who has been transferred to the Opunnke'branch’ of the Bank of New Zealand. Mr. Laurie Hunt expressed the great regret felt by the members of ■ the association at the departure of Mr. Taylor from this district, remarking that during his stay in Patea he had proved himself to he a good and true sport, and bis loss Would be much regretted. Mr. Hunt- then presented Mr. Taylor with a ease of pipes as a slight token of the great esteem in which he was held. Mr. Taylor thanked Mr. Hunt for his very kind remarks, and the members of the association for their very handsome gift. He regretted having to leave- here, but lie could assure them all that he' would always Jook back with pleasure on the days spent amongst them. After the singing of “For He's a Jolly Good Fellow" the gathering dispersed. MAYORALTY. • An effort is., I understand, being made to get bis Worship the Mayor (Air. T. S. Finlaysou) to change his mind with reference to the mayoralty. Some time ago Mr. Finlayson stated that ho would not again seek election, as he could not spare the time. it will he a. thousand pities .if his Worship adheres to his determination not to stand, for he is Undoubtedly the “rightman in the right place" and has always taken a very keen interest in the welfare of the toWn.
