DRIVERS’ LICENSES.

POWERS OF LOCAL BODIES. In the course of a discussion on driving licenses for motorists and the jjosition of the local bodies, the clerk of the Hawera County Council at Saturday’s meeting said' that although they could issue' them they had no power to cancel or endorse ■> them. Only the Magistrate’s Court, he added, had that power, even although the local body’s inspector reported on a breach of bylaws. There was also the question of definition of districts. In Hawera Mr Harding said he had discussed it with the Town Clerk, and they had agreed to refer those known to he in town /or country to the Borough or County Council, as the case might he. Still it was legal, for either to .take all that were offered. It will Ire of interest to note that up till March 31 it is not absolutely necessary to insist on a test for drivers where it is known they have been driving for some time, hut after that date thev mav insist on a test.
