COUNTY BOUNDARIES.
HAW ERA AND WAIMATE WEST. REQUEST FOR SEVERANCE. An old-time difficulty—one that has plagued many counties and about which so many ratepayers have complained, because of 'the trouble in getting two adjoining bodies to work in unison—cropped up again recently between Waimate YVest and Hawera in connection with the Inaha road. Ratepayers sent a deputation of one, Mr J. Bourke, of that road, to interview the council on Saturday, and in addition to asking for improvements to the road, they requested through him that the boundary line be altered from the middle of the Inaha road to the back line of the farms on the east, which really meant request for a merger with Waimate West. Mr Bourke said the ratepayers considered their position never would be satisfactory until the boundary was altered to the back line of the sections. All were willing to alter the boundary, and asked if a requisition would be eonsiderad favourably. They had no communication with Waimate West. The road had been in a bad state for a long time. He said he would not mind the high valuations if they had a good road. Years ago they had no metal for .10 years, and the road was still bad, although metalled. He asked for work to be done in the dry season, because what work had been done was carried out in the winter, and that was neither economical nor satisfactory.
The chairman said that the procedure to* cede a district was long, and there were many points to be considered. He did not know if it was the general wish of the ratepayers. In any case he did not agree the road was bad, but it must be conceded that boundary roads were never satisfactory. He said the council would let the ratepayers know their decision.
