SECRETARY’S REPLY TO COMPLAINT.
(BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION. WELLINGTON. March 6. The secretary! for the Post and Telegraph! Department has furnished a reply to a resolution purporting to Have been passed by Wellington telegraph officers protesting against conditions in the service and "the “excessively long” hours which; officers are compelled to work. Mr. Markina,n says that, the resolution makes it appear that the men are required to work straight duties extending over eight hours, without a spell. The official record shows; that during the fortnight ended February 2S. with the exception, of certain, night duty men. every man, performing straight duty received a, spell of twenty minutes each day from, Monday to Friday inclusive in each week. As,.comparatively short hours were worked by almost every member of the staff onSaturdays, it was not practical to give ~pells on that day. The duties worked by the whole, staff ,averaged 42 "hours 23 minutes during the week ended February 21 and 41 h ours - 25 minutes during the following week.
