Thousands of oeopie watched the fiames, wnich started in a tailor’s shop and spread to tlie anti-gas ractory. The damage is already estimated at several thousands. So far no casualties have been reported, but if the wind had been in the opposite direction the fire would have reached the explosive factories, resulting in an appalling disaster. —Reuter.

(Received March 6, 10.35 a.m.) LONDON, March 5. • The fire at Woolwich arsenal is officially stated to have badly damaged three buildings, comprising the tailors’ and saddlers’ workshops and stores. The cause of the outbreak is not known.—Reuter.

SPECTACULAR. GLARE

LONDON, March 5. One of the biggest London, fires broke out at the Woolwich arsenal, demolishing the tailors’ shop and the paper land leather factories. The flames were seen, over a radiu-s of ten miles. Fortumatelv the fire was three-quarters of a mile "distant from explosives and magazines. Two hundred police controlled the arsenal entrance. Two hundred firemen were- still working at the fire early -this morning, though the outbreak was under control at midnight. Tlie fire provided ta most spectacular glare and was seen, from London. Fire engines clashed across the London bridges and at one time there was a procession of over forty engines through the Woolwich streets. Thousands of people, realising .the clanger to adjacent buildings, left their Houses fearing explosions. The factory was utilised chiefly for the manufacture land storage of antigas masks and contained a huge stock of inflammables.
