NEW SETTLERS.
IMMIGRANTS TO NEW ZEALAND. A YEAR S -ITER ATIONS. DOMESTICS IN DEMAND. . , Interesting details have been iurnished. by an omeal of the immigration Department to the work of bunging out- new settlers uuiing the year which will end with this month. “hast year,” stated the official, “we brought out from Home 049 domestics who were specially .selected by,, the High Commissioner, and in addition there* were many domestics who came i.ut as members of assisted familes. “in ia!t there were brought out last year 961 domestics, and by the time “the present, year ends that figure will he surpassed. “We could place at least 1500 girls in domestic service in New Zealand every year. Last year alone we had •1200 written applications for them, not to mention, those made over the telephone land by personal callers. “What is wanted out here is, the general servant, and we can place- all who come out without difficulty. “The girls on the whole have proved most satisfactory, and .we have very few complaints. Of course the mistresses have to be considered, and •tometimes a girl who does not suit one mistress would suit another. We endeavour to place the girls in congenial positions, and everybody seems satisfied. “This year we shall have brought oujt, 'about 400 .farm, labourers, the same number as last year, and a very fine type of fettler they are. “Many people seem to think that the bulk of the immigrants who come out settle in the cities and towns, but ■this is far from being the case. These people proceed to country districts and settle dowi.i to work.” The present year has, been the second best immigration year since 1880, the assisted immigrants brought out to date, and who wall arrive- before the end of the present- month, totalling 9000. .The peak year was 1921-22, when the new arrivals who came out tinder the department’s scheme numbered 10,107. The department could place in New Zealand within 24 hours no- less t.lum 100 plasterers and a like number of plumbers, but great difficulty, it was tated, is being experienced in securing this cliast? of labour 1 . Immigrants have a home to go i o when the-v land in the- country, their friends who nominated them being required to accommodate them until Hiev start work in the district of their ohni-'e. 'The following vessels en route* to New Zealand are bringing assisted im’■>'.i*r rants as Milder: R.emnera. 262, WmTuu TOO, A”'aw'a. ?71_.and Suffolk 060 making a- total of 11931 These vPsiseba are e^ncotod"to arrive '-’t Dominion ports within the next few weeks. •*.
