Thomas George Scott Smith', a teller in the Bank of New Zealand at Motueka, who pleaded guilty to thefts from the bank totalling £619, was sentenced to reformative treatment for a period not exceeding two years. f Mr. Justice Ostler said lie had carefullv and anxiously considered the case presented by the accused’s counsel (who mentioned accused’s seriously wounded head anti leg at Messines), but he had not only accused to consider but the deterrent' effect of the sentence.* He had reluctantly decided that he could not grant probation. TAXI AND GIG COLLIDE. PAHIATUA, March 4. . While a Ngawapurua farmer named Donald Mcßae, with a broken ankle, was being conveyed to hospital in a taxi, the latter collided with a gig containing Joseph Rombach/an apiarist of Mangatainoka, and William Cox, of Ruawliata. Rombach was severely cut about the face and suffered from bruises and shock, while Cox escaped. DAMAGES FOR, INJURIES. CHRISTCHURCH, March 4. In, the Supreme Court Bernice Young, a waitress, was awarded special and) general damages, amounting to £935 fls 6d, against Mrs. M. Marshall, tiaixi proprietress, for injuries received through a taxi driven by a servant. of the defendant colliding with a telegraph polo through alleged negligent m.angemen.t and excessive speed. Leave was granted the defendant to move within eight days for judgment, a nonsuit or a new trial. ,
