' NOTES AND COMMENTS. (By -Maecenas.) The Rangitikei handicaps are due on Saturday next, and tlio.se of the Opunake Racing. Club will make their appearance on .Monday. Both are of great interest to horse-owners in these parts. Papapoiiga has not raced since the Stratford Racing Club's meeting, hut the big black gelding's- iianie appear*; amongst the Rangitikei nominations. When well, Papapoiiga is useful. Racing stables of Taranaki are well represented at the Rangitikei Racing Club’s annual meeting, and their presence will do much to make the gathering successful. Dig Push ran fair races at the Nelson meeting, hut his form was a little below that shown by him ori several occasions in Taranaki. Big Push Was under offer to a. would-be purchaser at £151), hut (Subsequently the bay gelding, was sold to Mr. Jefferies (a West Coast- owner) for the modest sum of £75. In future Big Push will he a stable mate to Viewpoint. A big commission was worked oil Passionate for his first day's engagement at Te Aroha- blit the small dividend, paid by Passionate was practically swallowed up through a defeat when well supported again on the second day.

The hacks engaged in the sprint /aces at the coming Rangitikei meeting are particularly good, and the best eight of them would be capable of doing well in moderately good open company.

For a considerable time horses hailing from the Jamieson stable were wellnigh invincible, but of late follower's of the stable must have lost a. lot of money owing) to tho defeat of several fancied candidates. As there .-is little or no chance of several of the clubs which were recently granted permits'utilising same for sometime, it is more than likely that for the present the permits will he given to clubs deserving of same. Those'who profess to know say that the Lake County permit will go to the ’Wellington Racing Club. At the present time there is r.i dearth of good handicap horses, both stayers and sprinters, in this Dominion, and it is many years since such a moderate lot were competing in our principal handicaps. Certainly there are still a feu - good performers racing in New Zealand, hut their number, is very limited

Like our racehorses, good jockeys are at a premium, in New Zealand to-day, and one can count the capable horsemen on one hand. And, what is more, few of the present-day apprentice riders'show'the promise desired." Certainly a select few of the vonnger generation of riders are going on the right way, hilt, like the matured rider, they are in ;i great minority. In the well-bred Dubious Air. E. Riddiford has a nice stamp of a jumper, and when next he sports silk Dubious should prove hard to heat. The .steeplechaser Master Peter is getting through useful work at Trentham, and when important crosscountry events come up for decision this clever ’chaser should lie well forward. , Sansalinn, which- wort the Novice Plate on the second day of Woodville, is a rare cut. of a steeplechaser, and as he is bred the right way and jumps well he may do well during the winter season.
