GALLIPOLI REVELATION,
KEY POSITION OCCUPIED
SUBSEQUENT ORDERS ASTRAY
LONDON, Feb. 14. Apropos of Mr. J ohn Still, s lettei, which it published on Octoper 30, , under the headings , “Suvui Bay Fail-, are,” “New Evidence, The Times •dves prominence to a long letter from Vlr. James Underhill,, of Vancouver, a former officer, who reconnoitred Tekke Teoe on August 8. Mr Underhill, who quotes from a report which he then made, substantially confirms Mr. Still’s facts, and agrees that Tekke Teoe should have been taken on August 8. , He adds that it could, and would, have been taken but for the lamentable failure of the staff. What Sir lan Hamilton called a “providential” letter was published in The Times on October 30 1923 It was written by Mr. John Still, a former officer, then of Kandy, Ceylon. He happened to be reading Sir lan Hamilton’s diary, and he realised for the- first time that he could solve several mysteries of the Gallipoli campaign. Sir lan ordered a brigade attack on the kev position of Tekke Tepe- on August *B. Mr. Still and a few other officers reconnoitred the position and reached the too, which they found unoccupied, and'informed brigade headquarters. Mr. Still also received Sir fan’s order, with the addition: ihe Commander-in-Chief considers the operation essential to the success of the whole campaign.” „ ’ , Unfortunately, Mr. Still s was the only battalion to receive the order, and this was only on August 9 because the brigade-major got lost. The battalion reached the top of Tekke Tepe, where it was cut off. Only a few, including Mr.' Still, survived to be taken prisoner. ____
