FATAL ACCIDENT.
FALL OF EARTH.' BURIES A MINER. - (.BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION. GREVMOUTH, March 2. A fatal accident occurred in a crosscut section of the Liverpool State colliery, the victim being John Knox, of Re wanin', aged: 53 years. His working mate, C. H. Hughes, aged 35, was severely injured. '■ The two men wore last week shifted from No. 3 section to the cross-cut section, and had been renewing timber-' mg for removal of a pillar. This work’ having iust been completed, the whole place collapsed, the fall of debris being estimated to contain over one '‘hundred tons. Knox was killed instantly, being buried, and it took over three hours to extricate the body. Hughes was also caught and l narrowly escaped death, sustaining severe cuts on the forehead and face, as well as a sprained ankle. The men had regarded the place as safe, and the fall came ■unexpectedly. Deceased came to the. Coast several years ago from Green Island, where he leaves a family, but his wife had predeceased him.
