ELTHAM.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) BOROUGH COUNCIL. The council met last evening. Those present were the Mayor (Mr. G. W. Tayler), Crs. ’ Clements, Bridger, Thomas, Taylor, Campbell, Lewis, and King. Or. Ta.plen. was granted leave of absence. . A special resolution was carried adopting the newly gazetted regulations regarding the inspection of eating-houses and fixing the license fee at os per annum. The regulations are to come into force on the first day of April. Mr. C. Cooper wrote protesting against the charges for extraordinary water supply at his private house, and also the Commercial Dairy Factory. The letter was referred to the finance committee to deal with. The Stratford Borough Council wrote suggesting, a 1 conference of the traffic inspectors, of Taranaki be held in Stratford to." consider various matters regarding the regulating of traffic. The borough inspector (Mr. G. Rbwe) was granted permission to attend the conference.
Tiie Mayor suggested that the conference should consider the provision of a regulation .governing the number ov passengers to he carried by the service cars, and on his motion the matter was referred to the conference. Or. Lewis suggested that the inspector should not allow the service to carry overhanging loads on the running boards, etc. A letter was received from the department with, reference to the formation of the newly constituted National Park Board, which provides for the appointment. of two members by the Borough Council and other local bodies in each ward. A letter from Mr. T. B. Crump, chairman of the old board,'on the same subject was received. It was decided, to appoint Mr. T. B. Crump and Mr. W. C. Clement as the council’s representatives. The borough treasurer reported that £3343 was received during the month, £239(5~ Being for rates. The sfas manger reported that five gas cookers and four califonts were installed during the, month, making a total of 33 cookers and 12 califonts isince taking charge of the works. The abattoir manager’s report stated that 206 head of stock had been slaughtered during the month and Seven head had been condemned. V FINANCE COMMITTEE.
Recommendations adopted included the following:—That a clock controller be installed in the gas lighting system of the Public Library; that in view of the fact that the Council bans out gas cookers at a hire of 2s 6d per month, the committee has no recommendation to make re suggestion to instal cookers on trial; that the Council repays to the Public Trustee the balance outstanding in respect of the Eltham Borough Council gasworks loan of £IOOO, 1922, upon the terms agreed | upon between the Public Trustee and the committee; that the clerk be instructed to take steps to collect amounts owing by way of overdue interest, rents, workers’ dwellings, instalments, rates, etc. —Adopted. RESERVES AND CEMETERY. Recommendations of the committee: That the Council accept the otter of the Eltham FootbalL Club of £l7 10s as ground rent for the 1924 football season, in lieu of a percentage of the gate takings, as originally agreed upon, and that the club be notified that in future the Council expects to be paid the full, percentage of the gate proceeds as arranged between the Rugby Union and the Council. —Adopted. GENERAL. Cr Bridger stated that this meeting was last which Cr. Campbell would attend, as he was leaving for England in the course of a lew days, and he moved that the Council place on.record the valuable services rendered the Borough by Cr. Campbell during the past five years, and extended to Cr Campbell and his wife very best wishes for an enjoyable trip and a safe return to New' Zealand, Cr. Clements seconded the motion, and referred to the excellent qualities exhibited by Cr. Campbell during his term on the Council. The Mayor and the other members of the Council also spoke, and endorsed the remarks of the mover and seconder of the resolution. i > Cr.' Campbell replied, and said that his work on the Council had been very pleasurable, and he wished the Council continued success. Cr. Campbell was afterwards entertained at supper at the close of the Council meeting, when a presentation from the members of the Council was made.
