Mr H. N. Allan, the special secondary assistant who has been appointed to take charge of the secondary classes at the Manaia High School, is expected to arrive in that centre in the course of the next few days. Miss Ruth. Sheat, 8.A., of Lake Road, Hawera, has received advice that at the recent University examinations she was successful in completing the ' M.A. degree, with honours in French. Mr. "W. F. White, chief clerk in the district traffic manger s office, Wanganui, has been promoted to the position of chief clerk in. the district manager’s office at Dunedin. He will leave at an early date •to take up -his new duties, and will be succeeded by Mr. B. L. Back from a year’s trip to Scotland, Mrs. W. G. Simpson, of Hawera, reports having had. a most interesting tiriie in her native land. She says that in Glasgow, where she spent a lot of, her time, the conditions of the people generally are not good and life has not gone back to pre-war state. She adds that unemployment -was still bad, and that in many factories operatives were working only half-time. Although, said Mrs. Simpson, it was a great joy to see the old 1 land once more, with its beauties and its charms, she was very glad to be back once more in sunny New Zealand. While in London Mrs. Simpson saw and heard Walter Pennell several times, and, she says he has improved in his singing very much indeed. His voice has deepened and has now much more volume. Walter was very well when she saw him, was in good spirits and very keen on his work.
