Spofforth, former “demon” bowler, referring to present-day bowlers, said he thought the length and break had lieen sacrificed for swerve, and the googly swerve bad to be controlled to be effective. From what he had seen, many " bowlers of the swerve to-day overpitched the ball. CANTERBURY V. VICTORIA. CHRISTCHURCH. Feh. 27. The weather is fine and the pitch perfect for the cricket match Victoria v. Canterbury. Canterbury won the toss and batted, Blunt and Gregory opening. Blunt was bowled bv Wallace for a duck in the first over. Crawford joined Gregory, and the second wicket fell at 42. when Gregory was caught, by Ellis off Hartkopf.
