X.Z. ASSOCIATION. . (•() NFE REX CM OF DM LEG A TES. (BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION.} CHRISTCHURCH. Feb. 25. The annual conference of delegates to the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association was held this roorui "g. In allotting dates for the 1926 championships, Manawatu, Hawke’s Bay and Dunedin delegates put forward claims. Mr. H. Hentterson. tor Otago, urged Otago’s claims on account of the Dunedin exhibition. He said they acknowledged the fact that they were not entitled to the meeting, but .he knew that if a vote were taken amongst swimmers, and not among delegates, it would be carried by 90 per cent, in favour of Dunedin. The Hawke’s Bay delegate said that to give Dunedin the meeting would lie to establish* a, bad precedent. On a show of hands the Hawke’s-Bay centre was allotted the 1920 championships. A remit from the Canterbury centre that a long plunge be added 1 to the list of New Zealand championships was opposed by a. large number of delegates, on the grounds that it was not a test of endurance in the right direction. It was distinctly injurious to health, and medical evidence was overwhelmingly against it. The remit was turned down. The Auckland delegates moved that the time was now due when pressure should be brought on the Government to appoint swimming instructors for each island. This l was carried. With respect to t'he “learn to swim” week proposed by Wellington centre, it was resolved that the conference approve of the idea. It was resolved that the association should discourage swimming long distances hv children when qualifying for sw i m mi.n g ce rti fien tcs\ It was moved on behalf of the New Zealand Council : “That consideration be given to the question of securing a visit to the Dominion by an overseas swimmer next season.” The mover said the conference should make an immediate move by picking out three or four overseas swimmers in order oi preference. A definite plain should be drawn up straight away. The Lours undertaken in co-operation with Australia had not yet been successful. , Mr. Atkinson suggested that the council should invite Arne Borg, .1. Weismuller, and Miss Morelins in- that order.
Mr. Boggs thought Miss Welisefcui should he asked. Mr, Coira, on behalf of the Wellington centre, suggested it would he better to get Australian swimmers first of all. Me thought R. Eve and M. Christie should be invited. It was decided' to invite the Australians first, and that, failing them,, to ask \Borg and one of the American champions in that order, the tour to be undertaken in February next. Mr. Coira outlined a scheme by which the New Zealand champion swimmers could make tours in both islands, swimming especially at carnivals in the smaller towns'. By "those tours he estimated £206 would be raised in the. Dominion and the council could 1 allocate
that to the Olympic Games fund. The conference accepted the suggestion and decided to act upon it as soon as possible. THE NOR DON CUE. CHRISTCHURCH. Feb. 25.
