While three men were walking through a cutting between Halifax and MaeNade, at night, they were set upon by a. man with a knife, who had evidently waited there. John Lawson received two severe stabs in the back, and is not expected to recover; William Harriss received a deep stab in the chest and died shortly after. The condition of the third is at present unknown. Both injured men are engine drivers. The attack is said to be due to jealousy. •' -

David Ballinghal, another engine driver, gave hinlself up to the poliee at Halifax soon after the occurrence.
