FRACAS AT SEA.
THE DAUNTLESS INCIDENT. CREW ACQUITTED. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT, (Received Feb. 24, 10.45 a.m.) HOBART, Feb. 24. In the trial of William McKay, R. Maynard and James Firth, the crew of the ketch Dauntless, the jury returned a verdict of not guilty, and the accused were discharged. ! The judge, in summing up, said that the regulations prohibiting the. ,iso of crayfish pots wore held to he il!ogal up to December S. On that date a validating Bill was passed, and on the 11th the use of pots was again made illegal. The accused, being at sea, were not made aware of the validating Act. It seemed to him that reasonable notice should have preceded notion. The alleged assault occurred on the 11th. jTlio ketch was alleged to have been trapninc crayfish at St. Helens. Two officials hoarded the vessel during the night, roused the skipper. who admitted the offence hut said lie was not going to he taken alive. An affray took place on hoard, and subsequently the two officers were nut ashore. Later the members of the crew of the ketch were arrested as they were going to Hobart by train to give themselves up to the police.]
