MANGATOKI

(From a Correspondent.) FARMERS’ UNION. The .first annual show of the local branch of the Farmers’ Union has been postponed indefinitely on account of the epidemic of infantile paralysis. Should conditions improve, the show will possibly be -held during-the latter end of March. That great- disappointment will be felt if the show is postponed for the year is evident from the keen practical interest taken, by the farmers in entering their stock in the various classes, entries numbering between 40 and 50 having been received. The bulls are a particularly - strong class, and the females are olso strong, comprising many well-bred and wellgrown animals. The entries in the other classes are also fairly numerous. On Monday, 16th inst., Mr Glasson and, at his request. Mr. .'Nicholas, judged the entries for the lucerne competition, the results of which have already appeared in this paper. Some of the members of the local branch of the Fanners’ Union attended the Stratford Demonstration Farm on Thursday. 19th inst.. and at the conclusion were satisfied that they had spent the day quite profitably. POWER. SCHEME. Progress is being made with the erection of the power lines from Tariki, the poles and wires at this end having been erected along the Upper Hastings road and Eltham road as far as Eltham. Also poles have been pilaeed along other roads in anticipation of erection. TENNIS. Keen interest has been displayed in the doubles tournaments held by the local club during this season. The winners of the last two tournaments held were blisses N. Perry and Mr J. P Marx for one and Mr C. Pilkington and Mr S. Marx for the other. Your correspondent learns that there will probably be another such tournament held before the season closes. By these tournaments a great deal more local interest is shown in this splendid form of recreation.
