BOWLING
No game has shown more wonderful progress than the historic game, of oowls. Since the days of Drake it has been popular with Englishmen and' that great picture concerning the Armada perhaps links it with the history of England in a .way that no other sport has been associated with the national life and character. In' New Zealand as in Taranaki the ga.me has progressed by leaps ana bounds. New clubs, the off shot of die older instituted clubs, have hived on and done well. Truly the story of progress has been remarkable, and the enthusiasm of members and generally che good fellowship are an example and an inspiration to many other sports. Naturally there are rifts iif the lute, but generally speaking the good feeling existing among players is pioverbial and universal. IN VICTORIA.
Records show that the first championship took place in 1877, and that the winner was Mr. R. A. Butler, of the Richmond Union club, who followed up this success by winning in 187f>. Of course there were only a few clubs in existance at this period, and the “Union” was one of the strongest, a reputation it has lived up to' to the present time. Other dual Vinners of the event are R.. Mitchell (Richmond Union), J. Pullar (Camberwell), Ben Hansen (Richmond), L. Wax man (Armadale), R. T. Kelly (Richmond Union), W. Wallace (North Fitzroy), and H. Brewer (North Fitzroy). Cl. W. Sims (of the Melbourne Club, Windsor) holds the record, however, as regards the number of wins, as he was successful on three, occasions. Sims won twice in succession, as also did J. Pullar, W. Bleach, and W. Wallace. Richmond Union members have won the competition on 13 occasions, and filled minor positions many times.—Australasian.
