BRANCH RAILWAYS.
POINTED REM AR KS. BY MINISTER OF LANDS. In the course of his remarks, when replying to a deputation at Manaia yesterday on the question of the Manain branch line, Mr. McLeod scathingly condemned some of the branch lines. He said that during his first election campaign, he was convinced that a branch Jim? in his electorate was not required, and he let his constituents know his opinion in no uncertain terms. He told them he did not ca.rq whether they approved or not of his opinion on a project which he honestly believed was unnecessary. The result, however, was that he got a larger vote than any candidate in that district. Continuing, lie said that many branch lines were a drag on the main lines, and it would pay the Government in somei cases to pull up the lines and pay for the cartage of freight, and they would still save money
