A.S.R.S. CONFERENCE.
STRIKE AFTERMATH
CENSURES ITS EXECUTIVE
GOVERNMENT’S ATTITUDE CONDEMNED.
(Bv Telegraph—Special to Star.) WELLINGTON, Feb. 20. The conference of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants, just concluded, was of unusual interest to railwaymen, owing to the fact that it enabled delegates elected from all parts of New Zealand to review the policy of the late executive, which was involved in the strike of last April. Considerable difference of opinion had been shown among members of the society regarding the advisabiltiy of calling a strike under the circumstances, and it was an open secret that the strike executive itself was not unanimous.
The recent conference passed the following censure motion on the . late executive: ‘‘That this conference, after hearing the full facts and having had files in connection with the recent strike at its disposal, are of the opinion that the calling of the strike was not justified by the circumstances existing at the time.” A critical attitude was also taken by delegates regarding the Government’s long delay in the negotiations and its subsequent refusal to reinstate strikers on former conditions. The conference consequently resolved: “That this conference, having had all files and details in connection with |he recent strike before it. and having full regard to the inadequate wage paid to the basic wage-earner in the service at that time, strongly condemns the action of the Government for its attitude before and after the calling off of the strike.”
