On a charge of drunkenness, a statutory first offender was this, morning convicted and fined 12s fid and 2s fid cab hire by Mr. J. S. Barton, S.M. The Hawera Post Office is becoming quite a lost luggage depot, a musicsatchel left a week ago being the latest contribution of an absent-minded public. ' In order to attract shoppers to Eltham the business people of that town decided the other night to have special discount days for two days before Easter, also to hold a “spotting” competition. Tje storm of a- couple of days ago _>laj i cl havoc in the gardens at Eltham and Stratford, considerable damage being clone. At Stratford fences were blown down, and hardly any of the wireless aerials about the town escaped damage.
In connection with the suggestion to hold a sitting of the Imperial Conference in London in October, it is stated that in view of the coming session and the general election to follow, it would be exceedingly awkward for New Zealand to be represented direetly by a Minister at such a time, states a Press Association message from Wellington. At the Timaru Police Court yesterday, William Scarf, who admitted having made a false declaration as to his earnings with the object of securing an old age pension, to which he was not entitled, was fined £5 and ordered by the magistrate to make restitution to the Pensions Department of the amount overpaid (£33) William Charles Henry Holstein, aged five, years, was electrocuted at Robinson’s Bay, Banks Peninsula, yesterday. The. hoy’s father and a linesman had gone out to repair a broken pole in yesterday’s gale, and apparently th« boy followed them. They were not aware of his presence till they saw him mixed up with live wires. The power was cut off and the child extricated, but he was dead. Reuben Childs Teague, aged 27, a single man, died in the Christchurch Hospital yesterday from burns received at Annat. He was subject to epileptic fits, and apparently had a seizure while lighting the fire, for lie was found bv his sister lying across the range. He was burned on the face, hands and knees. The well-known words of the old song “You’ve such a way wid you, Father o’Flynn,” were called to mind in the Supreme Court on Wednesday afternoon (says the Tarnnki Herald), by a comment of his. Honour Mr Justice Ostler on the ability with which Mr P. O’Dea had cross-examined a young child with a view to turning her evidence to advantage for his side of the case. The Judge said it sometimes happened that a man of strong personality and with such persuasive powers as Mr O’Dea evidently had, was able to turn to advantage testimony which was seemingly wholly against him.
